Due to Hurricane Katrina, this exhibition is postponed from its originally scheduled opening date of October 1, 2005. The exhibition presents the work of six emerging Louisiana artists who were selected from a field of 220 applicants by guest juror Tyler Stallings, Chief Curator at the Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Beach, California.
The 2005-06 Louisiana Biennial features the following artists:
Andrew Au
Andrew Au is a traditionally trained printmaker who presently uses digital technology to produce his imagery. His current work uses the look of currency to give us political commentary about economic power and corruption.
Srdjan Loncar
Srdjan Loncar creates sculptural art using photographic information by installing fragments of photographs onto styrofoam armatures. In this installation, he uses a replica campsite to discuss the conflicts between nature and industrialization.
Malcolm McClay
McClay's "Dogtail Wars" takes a probing look at America's current war on terror. The pieces in the exhibition look very ordinary on the outside, but internally they bring the viewer into the world of human rights, war, and interrogation.
Shae O'Brien
Shae O'Brien's interest in nature and the environment is reflected in her organic metal sculptures. Although they are solid and stationary, her pieces look as though they could grow or move right before the eyes of the viewer.
Chris Jahncke
In spite of any hints of narrative, Chris Jahncke's
paintings and drawings are never assigned specific or
literal meanings. As a series of markings and doodles,
the themes are open-ended and leave the viewer's
imagination to percolate where the artist's left off.
Jesse Greenberg
Jesse Greenberg created MegaBinx IV specifically for the Louisiana Biennial. It features invitational booths with touchables and a walk-through space with hanging tendrils. Intended to entice and entertain viewers in the way a good home theater system might, it is an all out sensory explosion of interacting lights, fabrics, sound, and video projection.
The exhibition is organized by CAC Curator of Visual Arts, David S. Rubin, who will write and oversee production of the exhibition catalog. The catalog also will include a juror's statement by Tyler Stallings.
